We all get those days when we wake up look in the mirror and seem to have aged 5 years over night- ahhh! Now we know prevention is key, healthy lifestyle, get a good night’s sleep, cleanse, moisturise and drink plenty of water etc etc…, but some days a little assistance in hiding those tell tales signs is a must. Now this is not to say your makeup routine is wrong but as our skin changes so should our favourite makeup bags essentials. After speaking with colleagues and our many glamorous customers our top tips for a youthful complexion (drum roll please…), are:
Overall complexion – Foundation. Unfortunately we begin to loose moisture in our skin from as young as 30 and our skin gets thinner with age, therefore it makes sense to search for an age specific foundation. For the mature lady, a hydrating liquid foundation with SPF and anti-ageing properties is key. If you are a powder fan, only use it on your nose, forehead and chin, avoid your cheeks and eyes as powder can settle in fine lines.
Lips – Our lips do not have oil glands and as we age they can lose their plumpness and become dry. Do not fear, use a matt lipstick (mauve’s and pinks will flatter most) or for more staying power a lip tint such as Benefit's Bene Tint (it can also be used on your cheeks), then dab a little lip gloss over the top. A natural remedy such as Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm works perfectly. As a little tip also moisturise your lips at night to keep them oh so soft.
Cheeks – As our cheeks can lose their natural pinkness as we age you can afford to be bolder in your blush colour choice! Peaches and pinks always flatter and again keeping up with obtaining a moisturised glow a cream blush (best on dry skin), may be the best way forward, only apply to the apples of your cheeks.
Cheek bones – On the plus side our cheekbones really do pop with age, highlight this with a touch of bronzer on the bottom of the cheekbone, then a new trick is a dab of highlighter on the top of the cheekbone for that enviable glow. We adore the MUA Undress Your Skin highlighter, amazing value for money and it instantly lifts the complexion.
Eyes –Eye shadow doesn’t seem to have staying power on the older complexion, adding a bit of eye primer will keep it in place all day and stop your eye shadow from gathering in fine lines.
It’s better to avoid volumising mascaras and instead opt for an eye lash curler before applying lengthening and curling mascara (Neal’s Yard Lengthening and Curl Enhancing Mascara is perfect), making your eyes appear wider.
Eyebrows – A fuller brow is an instant age buster, fill in gaps with an eyebrow pencil. A touch of white eye shadow under your eyebrow is another instant eye opener.
