The countryside of Sussex will be alive to the sound of music this summer as this season’s crop of Festivals take to the stage, consider some of Darcey's top picks this season....
Glyndebourne have been hosting their festival season long before the modern version came along. Running from May to August, their programme includes operas from Wagner, Rossini, Janacek and Mozart. There is also a version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Benjamin Britten), as part of this years Shakespeare 400 celebrations. The Opera House stands next to the beautiful country home of Glyndebourne’s founder John Christie, who together with his wife began the enterprise in 1934. You can make a whole day of your visit if you take a picnic and enjoy the views of the house, wander through the beautiful gardens and enjoy the surrounding countryside.
If folk, jazz and samba is more your style the next event on the calendar is Joy (25th and 26th June, Convent Field Lewes), a boutique summer festival celebrating the season with a rich mixture of artists, perfect for a warm weekend in June. To keep everyone entertained at all times there will also be a range of stands offering vintage interiors and clothes and household and garden goodies galore. No need to worry about food as the street food from around the world looks amazing.
The Love Supreme Festival at Glynde Place, 1st - 3rd July, is becoming a regular summer event. You can make a weekend of it by camping and get that real music festival atmosphere. There will be great music all day and night from headline acts including Grace Jones, Burt Bacharach and Lianne LaHavas. There will be four stages to choose from, the main stage, Big Top, the Arena and the Band Stand for smaller bands. Festival food and groovy stalls will keep you entertained for hours, you can always have a snooze in your tent if it all gets too much!
The Lewes Live Festival, 8-9th July, offers another music extravaganza. Again, camping is available so you can move in for the weekend and enjoy music from the Noble Jacks, Raya Rose and Voodo Vegas. A more alternative music scene that promises to give you a rip roaring fun filled weekend.
How lucky we are to have so much choice in such a small area. Remember we like you to look stylish at all times, even when camping. Our linen jacket from Join would be a wise purchase, ideal for popping around your shoulders if the sun starts to bite or you begin to feel chilly.
Darcey have added lots of Cut Loose styles to take you through the season. Also, keep a space in your diary for our accessory event on 16th June, we are offering 15% off jewellery, bags and shoes online & in our Lewes and Heathfield boutiques.
